چکیده

Cell ‘trap and release’ in microfluidic devices is critical for on-chip concentration purposes and dynamic microarrays. However, most existing mechanical trapping modalities lack release capabilities and some employ very complex or abrasive trapping mechanisms. Here we describe a novel cell ‘trap and release’ device, which employs principles similar to the ‘hydraulic jump’ phenomenon in nature. This new microfluidic ‘hydraulic jump’ trap is gentle on cells, allows hydrodynamic control over ‘trap and release,’ and enables rapid mass transfer of nutrients and analytes. Hence, it provides a new platform to analyze and manipulate living cells in physiological microenvironments.

An all-glass microfluidic cell for the ABEL trap: fabrication and modeling

The Anti-Brownian Electrophoretic trap (ABEL trap) allows a user to trap and manipulate individual fluorescent molecules in solution. The heart of the ABEL trap is a microfluidic cell. In previous incarnations of the ABEL trap, the microfluidic cell was formed from a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp and a glass coverslip. Here we present an improved microfluidic cell, made entirely out of glas...

A Simple yet Effective Microfluidic System for Trapping and Releasing Single Microbeads

In recent years bead-based microarrays have been widely used for biochemical applications due to several advantages (e.g, higher binding capacity, resettability, etc.) in comparison with static microarrays using biomolecules immobilized on a static solid surface as probe molecules. This paper introduces a simple yet effective microfluidic system with trapping and selective releasing of single m...

Microfluidic trap-and-release system for lab-on-a-chip-based studies on giant vesicles.

We present a microfluidic array that allows lab-on-a-chip-based studies on hundreds of giant vesicles through immobilization, engineering and release of the vesicles. Real-time observations of the vesicular response are reported. This trap-and-release system is also used to efficiently narrow the size distribution of the vesicle population. In addition, it can be applied to a wide range of defo...

Finite element simulations of hydrodynamic trapping in microfluidic particle-trap array systems.

Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation is a powerful tool in the design and implementation of microfluidic systems, especially for systems that involve hydrodynamic behavior of objects such as functionalized microspheres, biological cells, or biopolymers in complex structures. In this work, we investigate hydrodynamic trapping of microspheres in a novel microfluidic particle-trap array de...

Continuous sorting of microparticles using dielectrophoresis.

Sorting of particles such as cells is a critical process for many biomedical applications, and it is challenging to integrate it into an analytical microdevice. We report an effective and flexible dielectrophoresis (DEP)-based microfluidic device for continuous sorting of multiple particles in a microchannel. The particle sorter is composed of two components-a DEP focusing unit and a Movable DE...
